Former President George H.W. Bush gently condemned the polarized politics that dominate Washington in a speech Tuesday night in San Antonio. “These aren’t pleasant times in Washington, D.C.,” Bush said. “It’s pretty tough — there’s an ugliness there.”

At the same time, his son’s presidency is under siege, but Bush offered little commentary on George W. Bush’s time in the Oval Office.
Relaxed and quick with a joke, Bush, 80, spoke to a nearly packed house in Trinity University’s Laurie Auditorium. It was a largely friendly crowd, giving him two standing ovations.
