Immigration: The Human Cost

WASHINGTON (AP) - A defiant President Bush warned Democrats Tuesday to accept his offer to have top aides testify about the firings of federal prosecutors only privately and not under oath or risk a constitutional showdown from which he would not back down.

Democrats’ response to his proposal was swift and firm: They said they would start authorizing subpoenas as soon as Wednesday for the White House aides.

“Testimony should be on the record and under oath. That’s the formula for true accountability,” said Patrick Leahy, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Bush, in a late-afternoon statement at the White House, said, “We will not go along with a partisan fishing expedition aimed at honorable public servants. … I have proposed a reasonable way to avoid an impasse.”

In 2000, you promised to restore Honor and Integrity to the Office of the President. You have brought neither. YOu have, since the beginning, behaved as a spoiled child. Oh, we laughed when you said during your campaign “Things would be a heck of a lot easier if this were a dictatorship - as long as I got to be the dictator” Little did any of us on the Right or the Left know how serious you were about this.

On 9/11, things did indeed changed. You siezed your opportunity. Dissent became treason. Rule of Law, quaint. You took us into Afghnaistan, as you should, but then you looked at Iraq and four years later, we are still there. YOu stole, yes stole money for Afghanistan’s campaigns and diverted it to Iraq. You set up a regime of war-profiteers, who think little of our troops, all the while parroting a very hollow phrase to support them. YOu h ave taught the young men of the Republican party, that service to the Nation by the carrying of arms, is an impediment to a political career. How can YOU, sir, an unrepentant coward, a vile jesting stock of a man send American men and women into harms way? How can you, sir stand the idea that you have caused the death of men and women around the world simply because they knew Valerie Plame? And now, you have the gall to say that YOU will obstruct Justice? You expect Congress and Ameirca to believe they will tell the Truth behind close doors and with no Oath?

You sir, are a jackanapes, a affection’d ass, a knownothing. you are more spado than man. You are lower than a coward, for a coward knows his place. You are a tyrant. a babe with its pudgy, uncoordinated finger up its nose. May the souls of the 3,000 who died on 9/11, curse your name. May the bravemen and women who died in this misadventure haunt your every move - but then, you have no conscience. no sense of remorse or of empathy.

May God, not hear your calls in the Dark NIght when you scream for forgiveness for selling your soul to Osama bin Laden. and may history curse your memory

(ColPress) - Heart of the Colbert Nation - SuperConservativePundit, Stephen Colbert, has denied reports that he was responsible for the DoS that took down BillO’Reily.com

“Look, my ‘mob’ fixes votes - bridges, sexiest man of the year, that sort of thing. but using a botnet to take down Papa Bear’s website? Never.” Colbert was reported saying. He went on, “Now, it may be true that the microwave I sent over may be repsonsible. I mean, put enough Hot Pockets in that baby and anything could happen. You know what I think? I think it was that jerk Hannity who’s responsible…”

Pentagon struggles to find fresh troops
Pentagon struggles to find fresh troops

(AP) WASHINGTON - Military leaders are struggling to choose Army units to stay in Iraq and Afghanistan longer or go there earlier than planned, but five years of war have made fresh troops harder to find.

Faced with a military buildup in Iraq that could drag into next year, Pentagon officials are trying to identify enough units to keep up to 20 brigade combat teams in Iraq. A brigade usually has about 3,500 troops.

The likely result will be extending the deployments of brigades scheduled to come home at the end of the summer, and sending others earlier than scheduled.

Final decisions — which have not yet been made — would come as Congress is considering ways to force President Bush to wind down the war, despite his vow that he would veto such legislation.

In the freshest indication of the relentless demands for troops in Iraq, Maj. Gen. Benjamin R. Mixon, commander of coalition forces in the north, told reporters Friday that his troops have picked up the pace of their attacks on the enemy in Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad.

“Could I use more forces? No question about it,” Mixon said, adding that he had asked for more.

Now, I got this off the freerepublic website, and the responses are below:

The Associated (with terrorists) Press is up early tearing down our military, I see.

You want what . . . more smoke and mirrors?

Perhaps….but the idea we started out with that a guy could come back after a year and have 18 months to recover and chill…is gone. We are having guys prep up pretty soon for their fourth tour. I met folks in the last three months who wrapped up their 3rd tour. Talk to any Vietnam viet…who did two tours in a combat zone…and they will tell of the stress. We are taking our human assets and pushing them to the max. Add to that mixture is the election coming up and this “timeline” game. If it wasn’t a no-win situation before….we’re slowly drafting that way now.

(love the use of the word “drafting” )
Then there is this person - may I ingest what he’s ingested?
In case you have not noticed, Iraq is turning around and we are winning. The media will not herald it, but it is the truth nonetheless.

VICTORY will bring much needed rest… the way it ALWAYS has. GOD bless our HEROES and GOD bless the CiC!

BTW, I think we should increase the size and scope of our Military by properly funding ALL of it… all Volunteer!

The one heartbreaking post is this:

My wife has a co-worker whose husband is a reservist. He will finish his third tour later this years. He will have finished his enlistment next January. She has already told him that he has a choice her and their kids.or reenlistment. The kids are 6 and 4, they do not remember daddy.
